The Woman's Club of Norfolk, Inc. GFWC, is a philanthropic organization founded in 1905 and dedicated to promoting civic responsibility and the cultural, educational, and environmental welfare of the Hampton Roads area. The Woman's Club of Norfolk is a non-profit organization with proceeds supporting a variety of charities as wells as the maintenance of our house.
History:
The Woman's Club of Norfolk was founded in November, 1905, by Miss Virginia Gatewood. The purpose of the club is two-fold: to provide opportunities for spiritual and mental growth and to serve the community.
In October, 1925, for a cost of $45,000 the Club purchased 524 Fairfax Avenue, the former home of Alvah Martin, successful businessman and clerk of the Norfolk court. The house has been beautifully maintained in its original 1912 state except for the addition of plumbing in the butler's pantry for a first floor rest room and the conversion of the original gas-lit chandeliers to electricity.
Membership:
The Woman's Club of Norfolk welcomes both men and women. Dues are $30 a year. Call 757-623-9993 for information.
Two meeting times are available for members:
1. The Day Division meets on the third Monday of each month September through May at 11:00 for a luncheon meeting.
2. The Night Division meets on the fourth Monday of each month September through May at 6:00 p.m.
Bridge:
The Woman's Club of Norfolk sponsors bridge for youth in ten public schools in Norfolk and Virginia Beach and for adults. Bridge lessons for adults are at the club on Tuesday mornings at 10 AM or Thursday nights at 7 PM. Textbooks and first two lessons are free. Then each lesson is $3. American Contract Bridge League duplicate bridge games are held on Monday nights at 7:00 PM. Call Earlye Lee Miller, 757-623-9993 for additional information.
